Vibrant multi-part harmonies took over when the stars of “In Transit” stopped by the Billboard office for the “Billboard on Broadway” pre-Tony Awards video series, according to Billboard.com.
With the book, music and lyrics by a team of four writers — “Frozen’s” Kristen Anderson-Lopez, James-Allen Ford, Russ Kaplan and Sara Wordsworth — and an all-a capella score (put together by “Pitch Perfect” and “The Sing-Off” arranger Deke Sharon), the show is a uniquely collaborative one. The plot follows the intertwined lives of eleven New Yorkers as they struggle during a typically chaotic day in the city (and on its subway system).
During their visit, the cast (which includes season one “American Idol” runner-up Justin Guarini and Broadway regulars like Margo Seibert, Telly Leung and Erin Mackey) perform two songs from the show: “Not There Yet” and “We Are Home.”
“As we get increasingly digital, a capella is one of the remaining things that’s incredibly analog,” Anderson-Lopez (who’s also at work on a Broadway adaptation of “Frozen”) says, theorizing about why the style of music has seen such charts success lately via Pentatonix and the “Pitch Perfect” movie soundtracks. “It’s refreshingly human when we’re spending all our time with digital content.”
“In Transit” is currently running on Broadway at the Circle in the Square Theatre.
