There’s nothing quite like being shown unconditional hometown love. Alameda County in California is doing just that for former Metallica bassist Cliff Burton after a fan petition requested that his Feb. 10 birthday be marked as “Cliff Burton Day.” The county obliged on Tuesday (Feb. 6), officially cementing the late Castro Valley musician into the calendar, according to Billboard.com.
Metallica’s Twitter account announced the proclamation on Tuesday saying, “IT’S OFFICIAL! The Board of Supervisors from Alameda County has just proclaimed February 10, 2018, which would have been Cliff’s 56th birthday, “Cliff Burton Day.” Thanks to all of the fans who got behind this initiative. We love that he remains so revered.”
Burton joined Metallica in 1982 and was a part of the bands’ first three albums (Kill ‘Em All, Ride the Lightening, and Master of Puppets). Burton died tragically in a bus crash while on tour in Sweden in 1986. He was 24 years old.
