The notes of the major and minor scales and the sounds they create are the foundational building blocks of the vast majority of songs in Western Music. But they are not the only scales out there. Just like how we find unusual fish at the bottom of the ocean, as we dive deeper into music theory, we find other scales that look and sound quite different from the major and minor scales. These scales and the way they are constructed reveal some unique musical opportunities. One such scale is the diminished scale.
