As a way of providing suggestions to young ensembles about how they might perform a hit song, we’ve often written about how artists adapt their recordings in order to perform them live. In this month’s column we’re going to write about a somewhat different approach: how can you take a hit song and instead of performing it as close to the recording as possible, create a unique live version? We’ll be using “Clocks” by Coldplay as an example.
Coldplay is a British band formed while the members were in college in London during the late 90’s. They released their first album Parachute in 2000 which won a Brit Award and a GRAMMY for Best Alternative Album. Their second album, A Rush of Blood to the Head, was released in 2002 and included the single “Clocks” which went on to win the GRAMMY Award for Record of the Year. Since then, they’ve released albums that have sold over 100 million copies and toured the world many times over.
