The “man with the horn” changed jazz many times over.
A video playlist that did true justice to Miles Davis’ music would take many hours to unfold, so here are just a few choice examples. First, prime Miles from 1959, with John Coltrane on tenor saxophone and a rhythm section of Wynton Kelly (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Jimmy Cobb (drums), performing “So What,” the fabled leadoff track from the Kind of Blue album.
Next, a 1973 performance of “Ife,” with Miles and guitarist Pete Cosey going electric and freaky.
Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time” would become a signature ballad of Miles’ later period. Here he is playing it in Japan in 1985.
Finally, an hour-long PBS documentary on Miles and his music, first aired in 1986 when he was still going strong.
