Light Reeding for Clarinet

Just because saxophones and clarinets are in the same family of reed instruments doesn’t mean you should use the same type of reeds for both. In this video produced by D’Addario, Richie Hawley, professor of clarinet at Rice University and former principal clarinetist for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, discusses the challenge of choosing the right clarinet reed for your playing style. Two of his points are particularly important: You select a reed not only by its thickness but also by its hardness, and the numbers on a box of reeds indicate the flexibility of the reed—they don’t have anything to do with your skill level.
