The members of One Direction are now setting out on five individual solo careers.
Our November cover story examines the very different stylistic paths that Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, and Louis Tomlinson have taken since leaving 1D. First, here’s a quick reminder of what they sounded like when they were all still together.
Malik—excuse us, ZAYN—was the first to exit the group, and the slinky R&B track “LIKE I WOULD” was one of his early singles.
Harry Styles, meanwhile, opted to venture into the realm of epic rock with “Sign of the Times.”
Niall Horan’s folk and soul influences are clear on his debut solo track, “This Town.”
So far, Liam Payne’s post-1D material has been club-oriented pop. His collaboration with DJ Zedd, “Get Low,” is a good example.
Finally, Louis Tomlinson’s been making arguably the poppiest-sounding music of all the former 1Ders. This first TV performance of his joint single with DJ Steve Aoki, “Just Hold On,” happened in a very significant place: the set of The X Factor, the British talent show that originally brought One Direction together. More poignantly, the performance took place just three days after the death of Tomlinson’s mother from leukemia.
