What is an anthem? Most of us are familiar with national anthems - every country has one. They tend to be bombastic and pompous, but they bring pride to the citizens of those countries. It’s really just a song that celebrates a group identity, like “My Generation” by the Who, “Say it Loud, I’m Black and I’m Proud” by James Brown, or “All You Need is Love” by the Beatles, which celebrate a movement. An anthem can also be sweet and soulful like our song this month: “Put Your Records On,” by Corinne Bailey Rae.
Corinne Bailey Rae was born and raised in Leeds, Yorkshire in England. She was very involved with music in school and in her church, primarily vocal music. She played guitar and sang in local groups around Leeds until her breakthrough came in 2004 with the song, “Put Your Records On”, the second single from her first album. The record rose to No. 2 on the UK charts, earned three GRAMMY awards and three British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) nominations.
