Country singer-songwriter Sam Hunt is known for his blending of genres, and for incorporating the use of R&B and pop in the production and songwriting of his music.

Have the class read Sam Hunt: Country’s Latest Genre Blender (page 28 of the student edition).

Key points in the article:

  • Traditional country music has its own variety, but always seems to incorporate that distinctive country “twang.” Sam Hunt is an expert at putting pieces of unexpected genres into his music to give it a personal touch.
  • After graduating college, he decided to focus on his music career. In the beginning of his career he wrote songs for some of Nashville’s most beloved country artists like Keith Urban, Billy Currington, Kenny Chesney and Reba McEntire.
  • He became the first artist in 22 years (since Billy Ray Cyrus) to have a song peak on three Billboard charts simultaneously.

  • What do you think about genre blending? Are songs better when they stick to traditional sounds of its genre or is crossing over an important part of moving music forward?
