Sticking to the Samba

Drummer Christiano Galvão is a master of Latin rhythms, from Cuban timba and Trinidadian soca to the sambas of his native Brazil. In this video from Vic Firth, Galvão breaks down a a samba cruzado or “cross samba” groove with the help of a pair of sticks that have a mallet tip on one end (for simulating the boom of a Brazilian surdo drum) and a traditional tip on the other (for crazy rimshot action).
