What makes a great song? Everybody has their own opinion, and they can differ wildly. Is it a great melody? Is it great lyrics? Maybe it’s the beat. Or all of the above? There are many great instrumental songs or great songs with very simple vocals and melodies. Many people would say it’s the power of the performance, whether live or a great recording. The truth is that there are many songs that are “great” for different reasons. We’d suggest that one definition of a great song is the composition itself, and a great composition can enable multiple performance versions.
P!nk’s recording of her song “What About Us?” was released in 2017 and was the first single from her seventh studio album, Beautiful Trauma. It rose to No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart and No. 1 on the Billboard Adult Pop Songs chart making P!nk the soloist with the most ever No. 1 singles on that chart. It received a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Solo Performance and was very successful around the world.
