While our drummers are our time-keepers- the caretakers of rhythm– to excel, all musicians must possess a variety of fundamental rhythmic skills: musical and technical, internal and external. And those skills are not necessarily innate.They can and should be developed.
Yet, from the beginning, performance is taught almost exclusively as an external activity with little attention paid to the fact that rhythm— especially where drumming is concerned— is internal. Consider the many activities that express rhythm such as jogging, dancing or just bobbing your head to the beat that don’t requir edrums, a drumstick or a mallet, or any external device.
